What backlinks are
Backlinks act as a kind of corridor that links your Blog with other Blogs by using link words or sentences. For example, if you read an article where I have backlinked another article – “How to add and use instagram guides if you are a brand, blogger or photographer” – when you click on it you will be sent to another blog (in my case to another one of my articles). This sentence is a backlink which sends readers to other blogs or articles to read more. In addition, those blogs need to be backlinked to your blog post too. This means that you exchange relevant readers with each other and increase traffic to both blogs for free.
Backlinks significantly help move your whole blog up the rankings. Even if only one article brings traffic, search engines presume that your blog has high value to people and recommend it.
Rules for using backlinks
- Don’t use more than three backlinks per article. In each article you should ideally put two backlinks which go to other blogs and one which goes to another one of your relevant articles.
- If you use two to three backlinks your article should have more than 1500 words and one or two pictures or graphics. Having only bold text or pictures signals to Google that this is weird or untrusted content.
- Don’t backlink from blogs which have irrelevant content. If your blog is about fashion you should search for blogs which have the same content. This will help you to write an article where you can recommend to readers something which is relevant to what you are writing about now. For example if you write about the best moisturising creams for oily skin, in the article you should also mention that it is also important to protect oily skin during the day by using the best daily sunscreens for oily/combination/acne skin.
Thus all readers move inside of your blog which signals to Google that your Blog is interesting and valuable. And when this magic happens, Google starts ranking your whole blog even if only one article brings readers. Magic!
The backlinks to avoid
You have to be very careful who you backlink your blog post with especially if your blog has a lot of content.
- Don’t use irrelevant backlinks to your blog. For example your blog is about fashion so that means you shouldn’t backlink to motorbikes or pets or travel blogs because it confuses Google and it can’t understand what your blog is about. As a result, Google won’t recommend your articles to either fashion nor pet blog readers.
- Don’t backlink websites which look strange (Spammy, PR releases, forums). Avoid blogs with small content or articles which were written many years ago or a blog which looks unauthoritative. Always check their Instagram account, if a blog doesn’t have an account on Instagram or TikTok or YouTube this is a big red flag.
How to find backlinks
The best way to find authoritative blogs is via Instagram or YouTube. There will be bloggers who have similar content and who may be happy to collaborate with you and backlink to some of your posts too. You can write them an email that you backlinked to their article and ask them if they will backlink back. Remember when you text someone who has a big audience they may not answer but this can attract other similar blogs which are searching for backlink collabs.
