Reviewing Kim Kardashian’s ensembles from The 2019 to 2023 MET GALAs

06th, May 2023 by Anna Gooss

The Met Costume Institute Gala is the most luxurious and spectacular costume event of the year. It takes place on the first Monday of May in New York. Initially the idea of having an annual Met Gala was to raise money for the Costume Institute. Everything changed in 1972, when Diana Vreeland, an ex editor-in-chief of Vogue, took the position of consultant to the Costume Institute and changed the game. She transformed The Met Gala from a simple and unknown event into the most glamorous, magnificent and fashionable event in the World without losing its main idea: fundraising. Today Anna Vintour takes on this role.

Kim’s looks at The Met Gala are always the most discussed and viral. Despite the negative comments and hate, her appearance at The Met Gala is always epic and eccentric. Her team and the designers who create her looks do an amazing job. All her looks fit with the theme of the event but also perfectly represent her personality.

Starting with the MUGLER dress for 2019 The Met Gala theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion” Kim exploded on social media. The tight-fitted brown latex dress cinched in at the waist and draped at the front and back highlighted her silhouette as if the dress was wet and she had just stepped out of the sea. Encrusted with crystals imitating falling water droplets and reflecting the light, the dress showcased Mugler’s typical perfect craftsmanship. Alongside the dress, her slicked-back wavy hair, sleek skin and wet-look makeup completed the look.

The next Met Gala event fell on September 13, 2021, after a break in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions. The theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” in which Kim was literally covered from head to toe.  “What’s more American than a T-shirt?” she posted on her Instagram wearing Balenciaga. The totally black outfit was created by Demna, Creative Director of Balenciaga. The look consisted of a back catsuit with a t-shirt as a mini dress over the top and two miles or fabric trailing behind creating a dramatic look that characterized that period. No makeup, no sleek skin and no facial expression. It was the first time the simple black t-shirt has made a splash.

In 2022 The Met Gala’s theme was “Gilded Glamor,” a transformative era for America. Kim Kardashian wore the $5 million dress in which Marilyn Monroe sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Shocking? – yes!  Jaw-dropping?-yes yes and yes! To wear the Monroe dress, Kim lost weight, but in the end it was not enough, based on the damage done to a zip, which made the public angry. The whole look was phenomenal: she was blond, with her hair slicked back tightly in a bun. Her Marilyn Monroe makeup look and the whole history around the dress perfectly matched the event theme.

In 2023 The Met’s theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. The Costume Institute Exhibition was celebrating Karl Lagerfeld’s work as a designer for Chanel, Fendi, Balmain, Chloe, Patou and his eponymous brand. It’s first worth noting the fact that Kim chose to wear an outfit from the Schiaparelli house rather than one of those with a link to Karl. She donned a dress with freshwater pearls dangling as massive necklaces on her chest and hips, which replicated a top and skirt by covering her body. Karl used pearles in accessories and clothes, and choosing them was a genius decision. Kim is the best corset wearer and the satin molded corset in this look, highlighted her identity perfectly. Pairing the look with a long pearl gown completed the lavish ensemble.

It’s obvious that Kim Kardashian knows how to impress and dress; whether at The Met Gala or any other event her appearance evoques massive emotions and her outfits become trendy. I really respect her skill to choose a brand and outfit that emphasizes her identity without blurring it. I can’t wait to see her next looks and experiments with new styles.
