Organic deodorants: Kiehl’s, Aurelia, Malin+Goetz | Review

19th, August 2020 by Anna Gooss

I’d never really thought about organic deodorants seriously until recently. To be honest I thought it was a kind of marketing trick which made no sense and which I had no reason to buy until I gave birth to my sweet baby.

I had been a full-time breast feeder mommy for 19 month. In that time all my skincare routines have been turned inside out and let me learn more about ingredients and effects.

You might ask why these happened whilst I was breastfeeding. It’s because I had unbelievable hormonal changes with all kinds of unpleasant reactions on my body. I sweated like a pig. When I took a shower, I’d put deodorant on my armpits and they’d become wet and smelly in 30 minutes. I washed them 3-5 times a day like a racoon in the river but my armpits behaved as if I hadn’t done anything.

Besides I realised that when my baby was breast feeding his nose and face showed an unpleasant reaction to my deodorants. I started to think and search for information about deodorants’ entry into the milk and other scary facts that in the end led me to organic deodorants.

I was very sceptical the first time, the first reason was, I’m an engineer and know that because of  chemical processes and ingredients in creams, shampoos and other skincare products they obviously work much better than a cucumber on your face or home made shampoo from old melted bread.

I was sceptical about something that claimed to be entirely natural.

Kiehl’s

My first organic deodorant was Superbly Efficient Anti-Perspirant & Deodorant Cream by Kiehl’s. Ingredients: Aluminium Chlorohydrate (gentle aluminium salt), orange, lemon and linseed extract. It has Aluminium but much less than others. Maybe it better to say a “half-organic” deodorant but I haven’t met such characteristic.

Actually I didn’t have any idea about which one was best, I just bought a Kiehls one because I realised that they have deodorants when I was buying face sunscreen.

The first reaction was obvious, this deodorant didn’t disturb my baby during breast feeding and kept my armpits fresh. I had a wet reaction but no body smell and no deodorant scent during the day at all.

Moreover, I like how to use it. It has a creamy texture and the way you put it on your armpits comes from the hole and you easily  spread on your armpits. You don’t need to take a lot of products, just a small amount is enough and compared with roll-ons or other stick deodorants you don’t need to dry your armpits as the cream absorbs quickly and easily. I used this deodorant for 1 year in spite of its small size.

Aurelia

After a while I noticed that organic deodorants are so popular and people share their favourite brands best on Social Media and recommend them. This brought me to the Aurelia brand.

Aurelia Probiotic Skincare is made in Britain and has so many skincare products that it impressed me so much. Honestly I didn’t know anything about probiotic cosmetics (it’s amazing how much variety is available today).

Aurelia has 3 versions of deodorants and they’re Aluminium free. I have  Eucalyptus, Lavender and Peppermint in 50g. The deodorant has a cream-to-powder texture which you have to apply with your fingers on your armpits. I find it quite  uncomfortable but so practical (no extra materials which can destroy the ecosystem). It absorbs as quickly as the previous one but with intense herbs scents which you will smell all day. It really keeps my armpits fresh but wet marks still follow me. And the price is quite expensive.

Malin+Goetz

The third is Malin+Goetz. This brand has natural skincare products with advanced technology and high quality. I have tried only the deodorant and can’t say anything about their other products but what do I think about this deodorant is definitely worth it. It is aluminium and alcohol free deodorant.

I have the Eucalyptus deodorant in 73g.

The scent of this deodorant is light and when you apply it on your armpits it diffuses.

What I really like in this deodorant is the shape! It’s a huge stick that lets you cover the whole armpits area in one motion and it doesn’t leave marks on clothes.

I use it in the morning or in the evening in summer and I’m so pleased with the result.

This deodorant doesn’t keep armpits dry as in the above descriptions but it keeps the body smelling nice and fresh. Overall I really like it. I’m sure this deodorant will last the whole year and maybe 6 months more.

Deodorants vs Antiperspirants

Rules for use

Did you know that deodorant and antiperspirant are different?

Deodorants work as a smell killer but dont block sweat glands. That’s why deodorants can’t control the amount of sweating but can keep the smell locked away.

Antiperspirants protect armpits from sweating and block glands keeping armpits dry during the day. Antiperspirants work as by creating a barrier using zinc, aluminium salts and other chemical ingredients to create a protein film.

You should know that Antiperspirants should be used just before going to sleep (after showering) to let the ingredients enter the glands when they are not active and protect armpits the next day.

Deodorants should be used in the morning (after showering) to keep the smell at bay during the day.

Don’t use deodorant and antiperspirants after shaving. It can cause irritation and small skin damages which can start to become inflamed/become irritated and disturb you.

If you have profuse sweating and huge wet circles on your clothes which are obvious it is better to use special armpit pads. They absorb sweat and prevent colouring your clothes with yellow marks. You can easily replace them during the day and keep your clothes from wet marks.
