What cushion foundation is

Cushion foundation is not a specific or new type of makeup product, on the contrary it is a new way to use our favourite and well-known makeup product everyday. That’s why it looks like a powder and a foundation all in one.

The packaging looks exactly the same as that of a powder but when you open it, the cushion is the same texture as a foundation. There’s a round box with a mirror, an applicator and a  sponge that holds the creamy foundation substance inside. To apply the cushion you press on the sponge with the applicator.

Cushion can contain SPF, hyaluronic or mineral ingredients and different colors which you can choose based on your skin type and color. In two words: cushion is a kind of BB cream and foundation in a powder package.

What is the difference between cushion foundation and foundation?

Having a similar texture and look gives us the understanding that cushion is a foundation but it is not. Cushion has an airy-formula and includes different variations of ingredients inside: minerals for oily skin, hyaluronic for dry and normal skin and SPF protection in all.

Above all, cushion has light color correction and an airy texture which does not clog pores. Cushions don’t have as deep cover as foundations have, thus if you need to cover acne scars or irritation it is better to use foundation.

Another positive difference is unlike foundation which we have to apply on with a brush or a beauty blender the cushion needs only its own applicator.

How to choose

Firstly, you should choose a cushion based on your skin type and color. For oily skin it is better to choose Korean cushion brands or those which are directed for oily skin otherwise you can get greasy feelings as it could be heavy or too oily for your skin.

Secondly, pick the right color. Despite having a light airy texture, all cushions have different color shades. Avoid getting color disconnection between your face and neck by picking the right color.

How to use cushion

Cushion has to be applied to skin after a moisturiser. If the cushion has light SPF protection you can apply SPF 50 sunscreen underneath and then cushion.

I like to use loose light powder on top and blush, but it is not necessary, you can easily use only a cushion and nothing more.

Pros and cons of cushions

On the one hand, cushion is a really nice idea when you don’t want to spend time on makeup; you just put it on directly with a makeup sponge. And you can also take it with you and refresh your skin during the day which is quite difficult with foundation.

On the other hand, cushions have a limited amount of product, compared with foundation. As you can see it is creamy buff which has much less product than foundation and if you forget to close it well it will dry out quickly.

And don’t forget to wash the sponge every day, as you wash your makeup brushes.

As for me, I prefer to use a cushion in summer as it has SPF protection, light color correction and airy texture. But for evening events or hiding irritation or breakouts I prefer foundation.

My current cushions are Tom Ford’s “Glow tone up foundation” 1.3 warm porcelain and La Mer “The Luminous Lifting Cushion Foundation SPF 20” warm porcelain. Both are ideal for normal skin and I find them equally good.
