That thing happened – Low Rise Jeans are back

26th, July 2022 by Anna Gooss

Long ago in Y2K time, when we found trends through TV and magazines, we all wore LOW-RISE jeans which barely covered underwear and gave you a builder’s bum when you sat down. They caused horror for parents and teachers at school when they saw them on us. Millennials who were wearing those jeans definitely promised themselves never ever to wear them again. Well… low-Rise jeans have come back and brands are doing their best to let us fall in love with them and style them correctly, not like in the 2000s, absolutely not.

The trend started before the first lockdown, and is now gaining momentum. One of the brands creating the most memorable and viral low-rise pants and skirts was Miu-Miu for their SS22 Ready-to-wear collection. The highlights were a pleated ultra-mini low-rise skirt with cropped top, and low-rise cargo pants. Anna Del Russo, Irina Shayk and fashion influencers picked up this trend and wore them amazingly. The big difference between today’s low-rise pants and their predecessors is their loose and comfy style. Pants are wide and comfy with or without pockets, in denim or cotton; the main idea of them is to be loose and long, not tight and skinny like they were before.

Apart from Miu Miu, other designers have created low-rise pants. Dolce&Gabbana’s low-rise jeans are theatrical with crystals, casual rips, and a bohemian gold coating. Isabella Marant’s low-rise pants have embroidery and crystals.  Even Celine, famous for their minimalism and aesthetic, have their version of low-rise jeans.

Wear them with high-rise sporty underwear like on the Dolce & Gabbana runway, with a cropped top or shirt, and the belly button has to be visible.

Today’s low-rise jeans and pants are much more comfy than the 2000s ones, just because they don’t fall down easily and hamper movement which is the most important factor in today’s garments. While millennials look at them sceptically and swipe past low-rise pants style ideas on their feed, Gen-Z styles and wears them amazingly which means they are going to stay a trend longer than we might expect.
