In this video I’m talking about Iconic Silk Scarves , unusual silk features, Iconic silk scarf brands and the most expensive silk scarf in the world. Beside this you will find out about 4 women who made silk scarves trendy. And 5 new ways to style a silk scarf.

Silk was a great Chinese secret for many years, only China produced and sold it which gave them priority in this sector, and of course they didn’t share their secret with other countries.

But why did silk create so much interest from all countries and WHY was it in demand? The answer is, because of its natural features. Silk has chemical properties similar to those of human hair and incredible characteristics:

  • Highest durability. You won’t believe it but real silk is difficult to damage, only acids and alkalis can harm the material.
  • A silk thread is stronger than the same thread of metal wire.
  • Silk doesn’t burn easily. If you get too close to the fire or a spark drops on the clothes it will just fester and smell like a burned chicken feather.
  • Silk is the only material which has antibacterial and hypo-allergenic abilities. It absorbs sweat and locks the smell inside, which is why silk is such a popular material for pyjamas and bed linen.
  • Silk is the best protection from mosquitoes. They can’t bite silk cloth at all, therefore your skin stays naturally protected.
  • Silk warms you in cold temperatures and cools you in hot.

But all these abilities are characteristics of real silk, artificial silk can’t do the same. Nowadays many manufacturers produce silk garments and most of them have synthetic ingredients which gives them a similar look.

But compared with synthetic silk, real silk does have some negative points:

Silk can’t stand UV rays and if you keep your silk garment in sunlight the cloth becomes vulnerable and reduces its durability. Likewise, it can’t stand heat which is higher than 100 degrees celsius so never use a hot iron on your silk garments.

Inspired by Jackie Kennedy who wore silk scarves everywhere, designers created special patterns and designs which women spotted and started to buy for their use.  She was a kind of influencer who established new rules in style.

But Jackie was not the only one who made silk scarves popular and iconic, we know another person whom women from 2 generations try to emulate, and this is Queen Elisabeth the second who  loves and wears silk scarves quite often in her daily life.

Grace Kelly influenced silk scarves when she started to use them as a cast for her injured arm in 1957.

And the first woman who made Silk scarves trendy in France and in the end in all Europe was Josephine, the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. She loved to wear silk scarfs, and had more than 300. And she also shared her scarves with her friends who started to realise how practical and beautiful this item was and made this accessory a trend.

Silk Scarves

All natural silk scarves are quite expensive, for example an Hermes big silk scarf will cost about 800-1100 Euro which we think is expensive, but I will tell you that Hermes are not as expensive as an Ascher silk scarf which was sold for $ 4.8 million in London. This scarf is a collaboration work of Henri Matisse for Zika Ascher, a founder of a scarf brand in London.

Only 30 samples were produced. The original scarf “La Mer” by Henri Matisse was sold for $ 4.8 million at Christie’s in London.
